CERTIFICATE IN ADVANCED COMPUTER STUDIES (CACS)
1.0 PHILOSOPHY
In this modern world, where the computer has become a veritable tool in communication, it is necessary to provide foundation knowledge and training for both willing youths and adults. In view of this the Programme is designed to operate in collaboration with affiliated computer training centres in the private sector.
2.0 AIM
To provide basic training, knowledge, skills and competencies in the use of the computer system.
3.0 OBJECTIVE
At the end of the 6 months programme, the trainee should be able to display competency in the use of the computer system.
4.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
At least 5 ‘O’ Level passes including English Language

6 months (3 month per semester)

9.0 COURSES DESCRIPTION
1. ACS 101 Office Practice / Management: 3 Credits
This course examines functions of an office in an organization, students will be taught types of office structure; the meaning and functions of a registry, understand the uses of the various mailroom equipment (office mail and services), know the functions and services of the Post Office and other special deliveries, understand the types, importance and functions of office equipment.
2. ACS 102 Keyboarding (target 50wpm): 3 Credits
This course examines the list and name basic functions of parts of type writer; how to take care of the typewriter and understand the preparatory steps in typing, mastering the keyboard e.g. home keys, down, shift keys, use of various line spacing, various sizes of typing such as A3, A4, A5 and A6.
3. ACS 103 Shorthand (target: 50 wpm): 3 Credits
This course explains the history and usefulness of Shorthand (how to hold shorthand pen and notebook); consonants and vowels, light and heavy strokes, short firms and phrases, writing of short sentences and passages based on the principle of shorthand, short forms and phrases, speed building exercises.
4. ACS 104 Record Management: 3 Credits
This course examines importance of record keeping in an office and examples of different type of record keeping in an office; the information processing cycle (e.g. input, processing, output, distribution, storage and retrieval; the basic modes of storage (such as files, file jackets, file tags, paper, computer floppy discs e.t.c.). How to carry out each of these processes: opening and indexing files, filing of documents, perforation of documents and files, stapling, tagging etc.
5. ACS 105 Modern Office Technology (MOT): 3 Credits
The course examines the trends in technological development in the field of Secretarial functions; differentiates types and examines business etiquettes, office and ethics, know how to differentiate between a professional and other categories of secretaries, how to compose correspondence, understand meetings, conferences and their types, understand the steps before, during and after recruitment, understand types of office structure, understand the uses of the various mailroom equipment (office mail and services), know the common office terms, acronyms, abbreviations and slips. Office Technology facilities/equipments: phones, printers, scanners etc.
6. ACS 106 Communication Skills: 2Credits
This course examines the order of perceptions / experience, verbal and non-verbal communications; asking back, using tact, body language, good eye contact; respect of personal differences, offering praise, using humour and developing good written skills.
7. ACS 107 Basic Computing I (Ms Word): 3 Credits
This course introduces students to the world of computer, examining how to store information, editing, tabulation, letter writing, and various types of line space, how to design letter heading, header and footer, watermark and how to access toolbar, document pagination, etc.
8. ACS 108 CBT: 3 Credits
This course introduces students to practical on keyboarding I 0 – 25wpm on both typewriter and computer and Basic computing I (Ms Word) on computer.
9. ACS 109 Basic Computing II (Ms Excel) 3 Credits
This course introduces students to how to compute data, plot graph (designing different types of chart, recording keeping e.t.c.
10. ACS 110 Basic Computing III (Ms Corel draw) 3 Credits
This course teaches students designers such as graphic designer, design tools; and IT and Software.
11. ACS 111 Basic Computing IV (Ms Power-Point) 3 Credits
This course introduces students to the world of computer, examining how to store information, edit, tabulation, letter writing, how to design letter heading, business card, invitation e.t.c., header and footer, watermark and how to access toolbar.
10. ACS 112 Internet Browsing/Communication 2 Credits
This course is to enhance students understanding of communication technologies available on the internet, using internet communication tools, including Threaded discussions, tools for e-minutes, collaboration Web publishing tools, Web searching tools, Library searching techniques and Research tools to find information, organize it and to communicate effectively using information technologies.
