INTRODUCTION OF ELECTRONIC TABLETSAND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN FACULTY OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN

Abstract

The peculiarity of electronic tablets in the educational system and its influence either positive or negative on the academic performance of the undergraduate students triggers an investigation into the introduction of electronic tablets and students’ academic performance in Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin. However, the purpose of this research is to examine the significant influence of the introduction of an electronic tablet on the academic performance of students. The population for the study was all the nine departments in the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin. With the use of purposive sampling technique, three departments were selected from the nine departments in the Faculty of Education. The data were collected using Student Academic Performance Proforma (SAPP), while the data were analysed using percentage and Pearson product-moment correlation statistic. The findings of the study revealed that students’ academic performance was on the average before and after the introduction of the electronic tablet. It was, however, revealed that there was a percentage increase in the academic performance of students after the introduction of electronics tablet. The main finding was that there was a significant relationship between the introduction of tablet and students’ academic performance at the University of Ilorin. It was concluded that electronic tablet influenced students’ academic performance due to the numerous advantages. It was, however, recommended that electronic tablet should be introduced again in the University of Ilorin but proper mechanisms must be put in place to curb its negative effect on the attitude and academic performance of the students.
