CORRELATIONAL STUDY OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND QUALITY OF TEACHING AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN LAGOS STATE

Abstract

The study aimed at examining the relationship between the professional development of teachers
and teaching quality. The study area was Alimosho LGA of Lagos State, Nigeria. Two research
questions were raised and used for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to
select 120 primary school teachers for the study. A researchers’ developed research instrument
titled “Teacher Professional Development and Quality of Teaching Questionnaire (TDPQTQ)”.
4-point Likert scale type consisted of 20 items questionnaire was used. The reliability coefficient
of the instrument was 0.78, employing the Cronbach Alpha reliability method. Frequency count
and simple percentages were used to answer the research questions and Pearson’s product
moment correlation (PPMC) was used to test the hypothesis raised from the data collected. On
the ground of the result from the findings of the study, it was observed that teacher participation
in the induction programme, regular ICT seminars/workshop significantly connected to teaching
quality in Lagos State. As a result of this, it was recommended that all stakeholders and relevant
agencies should step up struggle towards the provision of adequate professional development for
teachers through various in-service training to encourage sustainable education quality. The
authorities concerned should give more privileges for primary school teachers to partake in ICT
workshop programmes in order to be ICT compliant and more effective in their chosen career.
